Psychology is the science of mind and behaviour. The word 'Psychology' comes from the Greek word 'psyche' meaning breathe, spirit, soul and the Greek word
'logia' meaning the study of something.
Clinical Psychologists are trained to an excepionally high level with a minimum of five years training on the human mind. Consultants have a degree in Psychology
accredited by the British Psychological Society and a diploma or a doctorate in Clinical Psychology.
Clinical Psychologists can diagnose conditions, carry out assessments and therapy with people.
Consultants work with people to help them understand their difficulties and bring about change in their lives.
Clinical Psychologists, Psychotherapists and Counsellors use various therapeutic approaches
such as:
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): CBT aims to assist people to change their patterns of thinking and behaviours which are causing the difficulties. The appraoch is structured and involves setting goals and trying these out in between sessions.
CBT has had more research than any other therapy and the results show it can be effective with a variety of difficulties from depression, anxiety, low self esteem to addictions, post traumatic stress(PTSD) and psychosis.
Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing(EMDR): a treatment method discovered 14 years ago, currently used by over 40,000 therapists worldwide, which can heal the symptoms of trauma, as well as other emotional conditions and dramatically enhance performance and creativity. Extensive scientific research has shown it is most effective and a rapid method for healing PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). EMDR has direct application to almost every human situation, including phobias, depression,OCD, overeating, anger management, low self esteem and body distortions.
Person Centred Therapy(PCT): is an approach to counselling and psychotherapy that place much of the responsibility for the process of treatment on the client. The primary goal is to increase self esteem and greater awareness and openess to experience. This form of therapy seeks to encourage better self understanding, lower levels of guilt, defensiveness, and insecurity with an increaseed ability to experience and express feelings at the moment they occur.
